Northern Exposure’s Top 5 April Holidays
April may bring lots of showers, but at least we have more holidays to hold us over! April blooms fresh flowers, and the Easter Bunny is ready to hide eggs all over town. It’s certainly a month full of laughter, family, and spreading smiles, which is something we certainly love to do! Here is a list of Northern Exposure’s Top 5 April Holidays perfect for sending funny greeting cards (and an Easter basket, if you want. Baskets aren’t just for kids!)
April Fools’ Day and Greeting Card Day (April 1st)
Yes, we know it’s April Fools’ Day (You can’t fool us!), but today is also National Greeting Card Day! How do we decide which to celebrate, you ask? Send an April Fools’ Day greeting card! (Oh! Clever!) Nothing says April Fools like opening up a greeting card full of confetti. (Just don’t tell them it was our idea…) People young and old will appreciate the smile you leave on their face.
International Moment of Laughter Day (April 14th)
If you’re reading this, you know how much we humans at Northern Exposure LOVE to laugh. Originated in 1997 by author Izzy Gesell, Moment of Laughter Day reminds people to laugh out loud everyday. Laughing not only helps to relief stress, but it also instills optimism in troubled times. The day can be observed by watching funny videos, telling a joke, or, you guessed it, sending a card! Send a card that will make someone chuckle with laughter, cackle until milk spills from their nose, and guffaw until they wet their pants. (Bonus points if you achieve all 3!)
Passover (April 15th)
This Jewish holiday commemorates the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. For 8 days, all leaven (a substance, typically yeast, that makes dough rise) is prohibited. Unleavened bread, matzo, is eaten instead to symbolize the Hebrews’ suffering. Passover is typically celebrated with a special family meal on the first night, called the seder. Foods that symbolize the significant celebration are eaten and prayers are said throughout the week. Sharing your blessings in a greeting card with those who celebrate Passover is a special way to celebrate the holiday.
Easter (April 17th)
Easter is a day that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. It is a Christian holiday proceeded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and prayer. While Easter traditions have varied over the years, the holiday is typically celebrated with a church ceremony in the morning, followed by a big meal with family. The Easter Bunny was a tradition that arrived a bit later. In the 1700s, German immigrants transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare. A creature called the Oschter Haws would lay colorful eggs. Easter is the perfect opportunity to send a greeting card. Consider hiding the card in an Easter basket for children (or adults!) with their favorite chocolates.
Wear Pajamas to Work Day (April 19th)
Wear Pajamas to Work Day was created to relieve stress after tax season. (A day we can ALL get behind!) For those who have jobs that leave you stuck in front of your computer all day, imagine how comfortable you’d feel in a fun onesie or fuzzy slippers! Think of what a fun conversation starter it would be to walk into work and see your boss wearing cartoons on their clothes. (We say wear pajamas to work or just have the day off – either way, it’s a win-win.)
Whether you’re observing the month by hiding eggs around the backyard, eating matzo with your family, or trotting around in your bunny slippers, be sure to pass on a little laughter with a greeting card from Northern Exposure. Follow us on Instagram for more holiday fun, and have a sunny April!
